Ponson, Floyd, Finding New Homes

The Twins are nearing a one year deal with Sidney Ponson, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Ponson, who went 4-5 with a 6.25 ERA with the Cardinals and Yankees, will either take the fifth spot in the rotation or fill in from the bullpen. The Cubs are reviewing Cliff Floyd's medical records one last time before finalizing a one year, incentive base contract. A deal is most likely to be finalized this weekend. Floyd batted .244 with 11 HR and 44 RBI. He will most likely platoon with Matt Murton in left field.

Why would the Cubs not just let Murton have the full-time job? The guy was a tremendous prospect coming up through the minors, and then he hits .297 in his first full season in the majors, and the Cubs want to platoon him? Doesn't make sense to me. This is the kind of move that shows exactly why the cubs lose every year. They have a great young talent who in all liklihood will be better than Cliff Floyd in 2007. Yet they bring in an oft-injured, over-valued player who will now take up half of Murton's playing time, and limit his growth as a player. Truly a dumb move. If the Cubs are looking for an outfielder, maybe they should look for a legitimate center fielder, instead of getting a third left fielder to go long with Jacque Jones, and calling it a day.
