Giants may target Mark DeRosa?

The Giants may not be able to afford a Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, according to MLB.com's Chris Haft. Instead, the Giants may go after a hard-hitting utility man, a cheaper replacement who can play more positions.

That player could be Cardinals third baseman Mark DeRosa, who can play multiple positions and is known to be a leader in the clubhouse. DeRosa would give that club another good veteran in the clubhouse, as well give manager Bruce Bochy the option of moving Pablo Sandoval to first base.

2009 - Mark DeRosa 68 237 31 54 10 1 10 28 18 58 2 1 .228 .291 .405

My only concern with DeRosa is that he will be coming off of wrist surgery, which in the past has had an impact on a players numbers. That could effect his numbers down the road.

The Giants could always take the trade route, targeting the power hitter they need. But that costs pitching, and may make sense to go with that 'Mark DeRosa-type' and wait until next years trade deadline to try and make a move.

What are you guys' thoughts?

as a cards fan

take him, add to your list of replacement level players

Eh

Not with that wrist issue out there. And even if he declines next year and they bring him in, its another veteran guy that Bochy can use to take PT away from a more deserving young player, ala Benjie Molina or Randy Winn.

The Giants need impact bats, not more veterans who may or may not be decent 6th hitters.

Pablo Sandoval is damn good. Get one more heart of the order bat and the heart of the lineup no longer sucks. Build out from there. That’s what I’d do.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...
