Braves release Kelly Johnson, bound for St. Louis?

The Braves decided to non-tender Kelly Johnson, who can now sign with any team Sunday.

Johnson put up solid numbers in 2007-2008, but couldn't get comfortable at the plate, hitting just .213 before losing his job to Martin Prado.

The Braves nearly dealt Johnson to the Cardinals for Ryan Ludwick, but backed out to keep him. Ludwick regressed from his 2008 numbers, but still put up decent power numbers.

The Cardinals have Schumaker at second, but with the opening in left presumably going to someone other than Matt Holliday, Johnson could be brought in at a low price and play second and left, rotation with the now-versatile Schumaker.

sign him up

Boy would Mozeliak look foolish now if he’d made that trade. Having said that, we’ll take Johnson now. We need anyone or anything on our bench.

Ahh thank the lord

Without Ludwick at the beginning of last year, it would have been a long one.

I would like the guy, but like every other FA to the Cards, it depends on Holliday.

My halloween costume: the Indiana secondary iPhone- no matter how much you want to love it, you know the coverage area sucks.

He is at best a Ankeil not Holliday replacement.

Its been buzzing around for a while that Ankiel is done in St.Louis, Johnson is a perfect fit in a LaRussa ball club power lefty coming off that bench. ALA Ankeil replacement.

Some days you live some days you die and some days you just want to create a redwing just to kill it......
