Bronson Arroyo on the Move?
The Boston Globe is reporting today that the Cincinnati Reds may be looking to clear some payroll, and the first piece to move may be starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo.
Arroyo who is earning $9.5 million this year as part of a two-year $25 million deal, could be a valuable chip for the Reds.
With injuries to Peavy, Bedard, Hallday, and now Matsuzaka (which creates the likely hood that Brad Penny won't be dealt), the starting pitcher market is very thin.
Arroyo would probably shoot right near the top of the list for teams looking to acquire a starting pitcher.
This year Arroyo is 8-5 with a 5.16 ERA in 14 appearances.
Expect several teams to be interested including the, Yankees, Phillies, Mets, Dodgers and Angels.

Arroyo has been garbage this season
Any GM who doesn’t realize that may just be hurting their team.
Chris Iannetta status: DOOM
Seth Smith status: Badass
Matt Murton status: Prisoner Exchanged for CarGon
Mike McCoy status: FREE MIKE MCCOY
Arroyo has value considering the market. If your looking at him as a 1 or 2 starter then I would agree “garbage” may be a fair word, however, as a fifth starter for a good team he can be effective. I also believe his experience with the Red Sox adds to his overall value. Teams often like pitchers who have performed on a big stage.

Bleah
Arroyo has been dreadful this year and is owed some $18 million between now and the end of 2010.
What Arroyo have you been watching
Ok his ERA is not that pretty. but if you look at all his other stats they are very good. Matter fact If you look at Wins he is only 1 win behind the league leaders. So sit there and tell me has been dreadful. Might wanna get your eyesight checked.

Sorry
His strikeout rate (K/9) is 4.9, by far the lowest of his career. His walk rate (BB/9) is 3.2, the highest since 2002 with Pittsburgh. His homerun rate (HR/9) is 1.5, the highest of his career.
His 5.16 ERA is 52nd out of 67 NL starters with at least 50 innings pitched.
His 5.42 FIP is 59th out of 67 NL starters with at least 50 innings pitched.
He has eight wins, which have as much to do with the Reds’ decent season than anything positive Arroyo has done. He has been dreadful, and is making pretty good money.

At the end of the day it’s all about wins and losses. Putting your team in a position to win a game. He has done that 8 out of 14 times, thats more than a lot of guys can say. They don’t award trophies to teams with the best BB/9 or K/9, it’s to the team that wins the most games. If a pitcher is available who gives you greater than a 50% chance to win a game, he has value. As far as his wins having as much to do with the team, here are a few games.
June 19- (CWS) 6.2 IP 2 ER
June 07- (CHC) 7. IP 1 ER
May 27 – (HOU) 9.0 IP 1 ER
May 22- (CLE) 8.0 IP 1 ER
May 17- (SD) 7.0 IP 3 ER
May 01- (PIT) 8.0 IP 0 ER
Apr 20- (HOU) 7.0 IP 3 ER
Apr 14- (MIL) 6.1 IP 1 ER
Doesn’t seem dreadful to me.

I think this is premature.
I don’t see the Red getting rid of either Arroyo or Harrang. At least not until they fall on their face which it kinda seems like is about to happen the way they have been hitting lately. With Votto and EdE coming back in the next week or two. This might change things again for the better for the Reds. All I know is Tavarez needs to be dumped and if Dusty benches Hanigan he needs to get a new brain.

He leads his team in wins with eight. He has 8 quality starts in only 14 appearances. Hard to classify that as dreadful. I agree he is owed a substantial amount of money, but given the dire need for starting pitching, he certainly will be an option. Lets put it this way, look at a team like the Yankees. If they had Arroyo instead of Wang, they’d probably be in first place. Teams always can use starting pitching, and some teams can absorb any amount of payroll hit.

Clueless posters on here
People always fail to realize that Arroyo is either great or gets hammered a few times. Bronson’s bad e.r.a. is COMPLETELY DUE TO THE INCOMPETENCE OF DUSTY BAKER. Dusty will leave Bronson in to get hammered and take one for the team, when 99% of other managers wouldn’t do that.
Arroyo gave up 9 runs in two different outings……going 5 innings in one of them and 1 inning in the other. Dusty is a genius, I guess. Deduct those 2 bad outings, and Bronson’s e.r.a. falls to 3.62. Geez…………..e.r.a.= 9 * earned runs/ innings pitched. Minus those 2 bad outings giving up 18 earned runs, it goes like this: 9 × 33/82 = 3.62. Not bad at all.
In 14 outings, Bronson has gone 7+ innings in half of them. He has 8 quality starts.
The e.r.a. stat lies. He is a quality pitcher if you realize he has a bad outing about every 5th or 6th game.
ERA is inflated by a few bad outings
Both last year and this year, Arroyo’s ERA has been affected by a couple of bad outings. He typically has given the Reds a high number of quality starts. Another team could probably get Arroyo and give up less than what it would take to get Harang yet have a pitcher in Arroyo who would likely be just as effective.
I have a hard time imagining Arroyo in a Yankees uniform. Don’t worry, I fully realize this is a business and these things happen and blah blah blah (and one of those blahs is that he wouldn’t really have a choice). But with how much Arroyo loved his time in Boston and the connection he feels to the Sox, it’s just hard for me to picture.
