Royals Acquire Betancourt from Mariners

The Mariners traded infielder Yuniesky Betancourt to the Royals today in exchange for  RHP Daniel Cortes and LHP Derrick Saito. Betancourt was hitting .250 with 2 home runs and 22 RBIs. Cortes will report to Double-A West Tennessee while Saito joins the Mariners' Class-A farm club in Clinton, Iowa. Cortes, 22, was the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2008 and was rated as the Royals' top pitching prospect entering the '09 season by Baseball America. Saito had a 2-6 record, 4.26 ERA and one save for Class-A Burlington this season.

Yuni is currently posting a horrible .278 OBP and fangraphs has him at a -8.3 UZR on the fielding side

Cortes, meanwhile, was the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year last year.

Depending on how much of Yuni’s contract the Mariners ate. This deal is somewhere between Horrible and God Awful for the Royals

if they made that trade I am guessing they dont have that much faith in Cortes

As is much of what they do.

Amazing considering how many of their fans are stat-heads.

Hmmm....

Does that mean Jack Wilson to the Mariners ?

So...

That means that Aviles is done for a while.

I have 1 question

Why are the Royals buying?

B/c the GM had a hard on for Betancourt for a while.

And they think they can contend if they get healthy, I guess.
