Report: Pedro Martinez signs one-year $1 million deal with the Phillies

  • UPDATE: Pedro Martinez will be placed on the 15-day DL with a mild shoulder strain.

According to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies are expected to announce tomorrow that they have signed free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez.

The pitcher, 37, underwent a physical today at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia conducted by team medical staff. Though the Phillies would not comment tonight on the physical, several people in Martinez's camp indicated that it went well. The contract, sources say, will be a one-year deal worth about $1 million. Martinez can make another $1.5 million based on incentives.

Good Deal for the phils

At only 1mil they can give him a few starts and If he stinks, they can cut him with little cost.

I'm sorry...

…he passed a physical and went directly on to the DL?

That’s odd.

I agree

Not sure yet what that’s all about…but I’m sure well find out soon. Most likely he just has some mild soreness. He was going to have to take some time to get in shape anyway, so it probably doesn’t change the plans all too much.

That sounds like what they're going to do.

Could also be a way to set up the roster for him.
