Buster Olney: Jays Need To Trade Halladay Now!
Here are some highlights:
For the Full transcript you can read here (remember you must be an ESPN insider)
- Olney says several baseball people have arrived in Toronto today to watch Halladay pitch.
- In order to get the best possible deal Olney feels the Jays have to trade Halladay within the next 12 days or they may wind up with much less from teams like the Dodgers, Angels and Phillies.
- Olney says the Jays should learn from the Twins who traded Johan Santana far too late, and received little guaranteed major league players in return. The Twins obtained Carlos Gomez, Phillip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra, none of whom are contributing on the big league level.
- As long as Brian Cashman is GM of the Yankees there is almost no way the Yankees make a deal for Halladay.
- The Mets would love to have Halladay, but they don't have the prospects.
- The Dodgers also would love to have Halladay but they aren't going to part with pitcher Clayton Kershaw.
- The Jays won't be able to sign Halladay, and Olney believes he has given the team all indication (respectfully) he doesn't want to return to Toronto.

I don't see Halladay going anywhere
The Jays are asking for too much, no team is going to nuke their farm system only to have to pay Roy megabucks on top of that.

Depends on how bad they want a ring at the end of the season.
I am happy to introduce All Star Third Baseman, Chone Figgins.

You have eliminated anyone but the Angels and Phillies.
So, what does it take to get it done. Will they make that call??
The Jays have to take less if they can’t pay him after next year. Otherwise they risk getting just 2 draft picks in 2011.

Assuming he's still good next year.
Could break down, giving them likely only the 1 draft pick that a type B nets.

I don't think anyone is banking on Halladay breaking down next year.
Otherwise there would be no interest, a la Mark Mulder.
Halladay is, by most estimations, quite the star and well worth his big paycheck. The question is how much can a team afford to lose from the farm plus pay the big bucks he will require to sign beyond 2010.

Gomez isn't contributing on the major league level?

Gomez
He’s playing, but I wouldn’t consider it contributing. He has a .299 OBP, not exactly the type of return Twins fans were expecting for Santana.

Wow, didn't know that.
Nevermind then.
