Pirates Ready to Deal Sanchez and Wilson

ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting that the Pirates are poised to trade both second baseman Freddy Sanchez and shortstop Jack Wilson before the deadline, according to reports from other clubs in the last 24 hours. Reports say Sanchez is likely to go to the Giants. Supposedly, the Red Sox were ready to make a deal for Wilson but backed off while they assess which prospects they may need for other deals they're trying to make.

Both players were offered contract extensions a few weeks ago but nothing came of those negotiations.

If the Giants can pull off a trade for Sanchez without giving up much, I will be surprised.

Sanchez cost should be low

Several reasons why the cost for Sanchez shouldn’t be much. He’s injured, and whether this injury is minor or not, he’s just been terrible lately. And he hasn’t been an above average hitter since June 1. His June avg and OBP both dropped 50 points from his May one, and he’s only hitting 250/290/360. Uribe’s a journeyman utility IF, but even he’s 285/315/430 on season. Granted, Sanchez is the much better defender, and assuming Sanchez returns to his usual hitting self, would be projected to do better the rest of the season.

But not $8.1M good. Perhaps the best thing is for Freddy to be hurt, so he can’t hit get to 600 ABs and trigger the automatic $8.1M option for next season. From that perspective, to the Bucs, not only is Sanchez like a FA on a non-contending team, who they’ll give away to get anything back in return … he’s worse to them. They would rather he leave as a free agent than have to pay $8M for him next year.

Considering his poor play and overpriced salary, I don’t think there’s a large market for Sanchez at all. It’s really just the Giants, and perhaps the two Chicago teams. Depending on how he hits the rest of the season, it’s not inconceivable that he would pass waivers.
