Brewers/Sox Waiver Deal?
Buster Olney has a cryptic note today on ESPN about JJ Hardy not clearing waivers. He also mentions previous talks between the Red Sox and Brewers and wonders if those talks are starting up again.
Using Kalkman's TVC, Hardy is approximately worth about $10mm in a trade, which if youre talking about the Red Sox means a guy like Michael Bowden or Daniel Bard.
The Sox need a Shortstop and the Brewers need to make way for Alcides Escobar.
If the Brewers had some foresight, they could have dealt Hardy during last year's offseason and gotten a very good #2 starting pitcher, which would have them in a much better spot than they are now. Of course hindsight is 20/20 and there is nothing they can do about that now (I personally was a big proponent of moving Hardy last offseason to make way for the defensively superior Escobar to pick up pitching.)
Would the Sawx give up Bowden for Hardy? Would the Brewers feel short changed in that deal? Would they part with Bard? The only plus right now that Bard could bring the Brewers would be as the 2010 closer, unless he reverts back his starter ways at UNC.
Thoughts?

The Red Sox say that Bard is untouchable
So he’s probably not going anywhere, especially with the dearth of good pitching there nowadays :)
I think that they certainly need a young guy, Hardy would fit the bill. Lowrie is apparently to injury prone for the Red Sox, and Lugo’s revival(Go Cardinals) is elsewhere, not in Boston. However, i don’t think they make a move at this time (at least they will wait until the offseason) unless they are absolutely sure they can make the playoffs.
Man, with this outfield, need to get rid of that Rasmus guy. :)
I'd hestitate to call Jed "injury prone" just yet.
He broke his left wrist last year, and played phenomenally well considering that (unfortunately, he also probably furthered the damage). They tried to let the injury heal itself over the winter, and it appeared it had, until it started feeling sore and he finally had surgery. Now, he’s trying to come back, and he starts feeling tingling in his fingers – could easily be something from the surgery, or perhaps he slept on it wrong, etc. The DL trip seems more precautionary, as the Sox would prefer not having Green be the SS during the stretch run.
Now, for the rumors – no way in hell he made it to us unclaimed. Even if he did, the Sox aren’t going to give up Bowden, who could be a spot starter down the stretch, or Bard, who (despite recent performances) will likely fill the stupidest role on the team after Paps leaves chasing the money.

I'll agree with you
which is hard for a yankee fan to do. Sox front office s not dumb. you just don’t trade your good young arms for a SS.

Not during this season, the Brewers are contending, so I dunno
Carlos Guillen, the Latino Nick Punto
Not quite contending
It might appear that way, but they are a longshot for the playoffs this year.
I agree its unlikely right now, but it would be a good move for a lost season to get Escobar some seasoning for next year. They should have dealt him last year, heck with the Sawx they could have gotten Buchholz and Bowden if they had wanted to.
ok
At least Melvin isnt trading away the whole future again

Brewers looking to 2010
Milwaukee’s out. 9 games back of Stl, 8 back of the WC. Every SP they’ve tried this season except Yovani has an ERA > 5 (averaging over 5.5), and they just DFA’d their opening day 3B, sent their starting SS for the past 5 years to the minors, have one of their opening day starting OFs and 2 SPs from their opening day rotation on the DL and their starting 2B is out for the year.
And no way Boston gives up Bard. They might give a low level prospect for Hardy along with paying the rest of his salary.
Update
Brewers sent Hardy to AAA today. A trade could still be in the works.
Good move I say. Ive never been a big Hardy fan, felt he overachieved offensively and that his defense was overrated. Gives Escobar a shot now to get big league at bats and if this means a deal in place maybe they are getting a young pitcher or two in return.
BCBs high school moderator thinks the move is unwarranted, and claims bad luck. there is some validity to this, but there are stats put up by Hardy this year that show its more than a slump, but the beginning of a decline.
There are stats that say anything about anything
he also can’t be in a decline if he wasn’t good as you claim.
Not really.
Unless you try to put random numbers together, it’s hard to use a generally accepted metric and not draw reliable indications from it.
And why can’t he be in decline? His numbers were great earlier in his career, and now they’re not so great. Unless I missed an update to the definition, I’m pretty sure that’s a decline. Maybe you’d prefer the term “regress” in this case, since it involves returning to a true skill level (well, backtocali’s perception of his skill level).
