Padres closer Heath Bell put on waivers

The San Diego Padres place closer Heath Bell on waivers Friday, ESPN.com's Peter Gammons is reporting. Bell continues his dominance on the season, posting a 1.75 ERA in 44 appearances.

The Angels reportedly have some interest in Bell, but it is uncertain as to which role Bell would fill. Angels closer Brian Fuentes owns a 4.12 ERA in 45 games, and has a 2.45 ERA in August. Some within the industry believe the Padres will not be able to move him.

San Diego put Heath Bell on waivers Friday, and the Angels reportedly are interested, but several GMs expressed doubt that the Padres would be able trade him. "They should take Francisco Cordero," one GM says. "The Reds will move him."

The Brewers are a team that could go after Heath Bell. Trevor Hoffman is likely done after this season, and the Brewers need someone who can hold that spot as successfully as Hoffman has this season. However, we all saw the Brewers try and fail to pull off trades last month, suggesting they are hesitant to take on payroll or move young players.

Bell is going to be incredibly expensive

and I don’t see how he’d clear. Any team would be smart to make a claim on him.
