Brewers targeting pitchers this offseason?

The Brewers are in need of serious pitching help and have no up-and-coming prospects who could fill a void in their rotation. Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo is the only pitcher with an ERA under four, and one of two pitchers with a winning record.

Starters may be hard to come by this offseason, with Angels ace John Lackey leading the way. Lackey will likely dip into the free agent waters, but the Angels should still be considered the favorite to land him. With the economy still in decline, you expect contracts to come down and teams to wait longer for prices to drop.

The Brewers have a better chance on landing someone like Jason Marquis or Jarrod Washburn, both of whom are having superb years. Marquis might be the more attractive option, being an innings-eater with five years of experience in the NL Central. Not to mention owning a 2.67 ERA in seven career games at Miller Park.

There is also the possibility that Marquis will want to stay in Colorado

Apodaca has done good work with Marquis’ fastball/sinker. I imagine the Rockies won’t want to pony up, considering they have a lot of young talent getting ready to emerge in Jhoulys Chacin, Brandon Hynick, Esmil Rogers, etc, and that’s not accounting for the potential return of Jeff Francis.

Marquis only being a Type B will make him signable, and still get the Rockies a comp pick.

Marquis = Suppan

For the Brewers in the scope of the type of signing this would be. Both coming off of career years, while usually being a .500 pitcher, bottom of the rotation guy.

The Brewers dont need a guy like Marquis or Washburn, they need a top quality #2 type starting pitcher, whether it comes as an FA signing, a trade, or a trade for a prospect who is MLB ready.

JJ Hardy and Casey McGehee are going to be their best bargaining chips in obtaining a player like that. Hardy’s career is done in Milwaukee, and come next year, McGehee will have no where to play, and all of that built up value for him will be lost if they hold onto him.
