Red Sox Release John Smoltz
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com the Red Sox have officially released right-hander John Smoltz. The Red Sox will eat the remainder of his $5.5 million salary. Sources tell Ken Rosenthal that the Dodgers, Marlins, Cardinals and Rangers have expressed interest in signing Smoltz. Smoltz intends to keep playing and is open to being a starter or a reliever.
Smotlz had an 8.33 ERA in 40 innings with the Red Sox, but did have a 3.67 K/BB ratio and a very unlucky .390 BABIP. His fastball velocity was down over a MPH from recent years but it's still possible that he could find some of his former success.
