Padres extend David Eckstein

The Padres have signed second baseman David Eckstein to a one year contract through 2010.

"When we signed David, we knew that we were getting a championship caliber player who knows what it takes to win," Padres GM Kevin Towers said in a statement. "He brings a tremendous amount of experience and serves as an example, both on the field and in the clubhouse, to many of the young players coming through our system."

Eckstein is hitting .255 this season with a K/BB ratio of 29/27. He has made only one error in the field this season.
