The Red Sox have signed free-agent right hander Paul Byrd to a minor league contract, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting. The Red Sox, seeking additional help in their rotation down the stretch, will assign Byrd to the minors before calling him up likely for the final month.
Bryd went 4-2 with a 4.78 ERA after the Red Sox acquired him from the Indians last season. Byrd is typically a slow starter, posting a career 5.23 ERA in April. However, with the additional rest he has had this season, he should be in excellent shape and could give the Red Sox a solid two or three starts.
