John Smoltz Designated for Assignment

The Red Sox have given themselves ten days to trade or release former Cy Young winner John Smoltz, after designating him for assignment today. The Bo Sox signed him to a 1-year, $5.5 million contract last winter but with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts, the Red Sox have pulled the plug on what may be his last hurrah.
