Giants call up top prospect Buster Posey
With Bengie Molina slowly recovering from an upper quad strain, the Giants have called up top prospect Buster Posey from Triple-A Fresno. Posey is hitting an impressive .321 for Fresno, with a .391 on-base percentage and 5 home runs.
"Buster's the best catcher in our system," Bochy said. "We needed some help. We felt at this time this would give us more coverage, a little more depth."
The Giants are one game behind the Rockies in the Wild Card, and hope Posey can catch on with the teams pitching staff as well as find his swing at the plate. If he has a strong September, the Giants would be faced with the decision to let Bengie Molina walk as a free agent.
Asked if he believed that club management was sending him a "message," Molina replied, "You know what? Probably. This is baseball, and as they can tell you, it's a business. This might mean that I might not be coming back next year. Who knows? I'm ready for everything, man. I've been in the league so long. I know how baseball goes.
Molina is hitting just .256 since the All-Star break.

Funny....
I always thought James Posey was a ‘buster’…who knew there’d eventually be a dude named Buster Posey.
Dude starts a new wave of excellent catchers that will make the league in a few years.
GODZZIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
it's about winning now
Why does there need to be any ulterior motives with respect to Molina? Giants need to win now; Bengie’s been hurt, backup catcher Eli Whiteside can’t hit LHP, Giants have tremendous difficulty getting on base or scoring. Add in the fact that Posey decided to not play in the Baseball World Cup but take time off to recover from a collision at the plate and to play in the Arizona Fall League, so he’s now available.
Regardless of whether Posey was called up in Sept or not, Bengie wanted a 2 year contract and the Giants weren’t looking to pay any FA catcher starter’s money for 2 years since they knew Posey was waiting in the wings.
Bengie’s a pro and doesn’t need any additional motivation. Wish him well in getting a new contract and wherever he lands. Would love to have him return to the Giants (though hopefully the team will have a better hitter to hit cleanup next year!) but it would need to be at a reduced cost. If he’s willing to do that, then welcome back!
And what’s with the “Bengie’s hitting .256” since the all-star break line?
He hit .264 before the break.
