Dan Uggla trade rumors, once again
The Miami Herald is reporting that the Marlins plan to keep their payroll in the range of 37 million dollars, meaning players like Dan Uggla and Jeremy Hermida could be shopped. Uggla has put together his third straight 30-home run season, but has seen OBP, SLUG, and OPS dip across the board.
Uggla, who will be 30 when the season starts, doesn't have much range for a second baseman. However, he is feared hitter with experience hitting in the two and five spot.
Teams like the Dodgers and Giants are obvious targets, but don't be surprised to see the Cardinals, Rockies, Mariners, or Twins make contact with the Marlins. Keep in mind that Uggla, who has some experience playing third base, could switch positions if traded.

Uggla to the twins
Trade for Uggla move him to 3rd and keep Punto at 2nd while resigning Cabrera at SS… Trade Delmon Young and Anthony Swarzak for Uggla . Lineup would be
1.Span
2.Cabrera
3.Mauer
4.Morneau
5.Kubel
6.Cuddyer
7.Ugla
8.Gomez
9.Punto
To have Uggla batting 7th in a lineup would be very strong… The Twins 3,4,5,6,7 hitters could all hit 30 Homeruns!!! Thats over 150 homeruns from 5 guys in the lineup! and you would still have plenty of speed with Span, Cabrera, Gomez, and Punto.
Trouble is, that makes no sense for the Marlins.
Young and Swarzak have, at best, outside shots to develop into major league-quality starters. Young is a corner outfielder; he’s not a horrendous contact hitter, but his power is limited, and his plate discipline is appalling. We’re talking sub-Howie Kendrick levels here. And he’s been in the majors over three seasons, so it’s not like he’s still adjusting. He’s just not good. And Swarzak… I don’t think Swarzak even has the stuff to be a major-league starter, and his 76 hits and 34 strikeouts in 59 innings this year tend to bear that notion out. He could get better; I don’t know that it’ll be enough.
Whereas if you look at the Marlins — they already have enough young starters with question marks. Nolasco, Miller, West, Vandenhurk, Sanchez, Volstad. All are between 23 and 26, and all have pitched better this year than Swarzak. So if you call Josh Johnson 1, they’re 2 through 7. Swarzak would be 8… at best.
And as for the outfielders… Marlins have Maybin as their future CF. Stanton as their future RF — though he’s a couple years off. But as few corner outfielders as they have right now, I’d take Cody Ross over Young. I’d take Jeremy Hermida over Young — and Hermida is likely on the way out. I’d even take Brett Carroll over Young, most likely. And last but not least, I’d keep Uggla at second and leave Chris Coghlan in left for another year over Young.
Not saying I want the Marlins to do that, necessarily — Coghlan is the future, and he’s obviously worth much more as a 2B than out-of-position in the outfield. But Uggla posted a .812 OPS this year in an off-year — an off-year that saw him post a career-low .271 BABIP. (His line-drive percentage wasn’t down either — 18% compared to a career 17% — and he posted his lowest strikeout total since 2006.) They’re not trading him for a couple of replacement-level scrubs — if they do deal him, I suspect they’ll demand equivalent talent and/or real prospects.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
well
When i metnioned Swarzak i ment a pitcher like him such as Manship or even Liriano…But i do see your point.
If the Twins are planning on shipping a pitcher this offseason at all, realistically the one pitcher I think they could get the most in return from is Liriano. Yes he has had an awful last two seasons as a starting pitcher…but what he has done out of the bullpen for the team down the stretch run has been huge. The KC game might have been a bit of a set back, but if teams are looking for a middle relief pitcher…which just about every team is these days….Liriano has the potential to be a great role player in the bull pen and i think teams will take that into consideration.
