Red Sox to pursue John Buck, V-Mart walking?

The Red Sox are looking into the possibility of bringing in catcher John Buck, according to ESPN.com Gordon Edes. Buck, 30, had a career year in Toronto tying his career high in games played but set a new high in at-bats with 409. With that, he also set career highs in nearly every offensive category, leading the way with a .281 average and 20 home runs.

Sources have indicated that the Red Sox believe Victor Martinez will sign elsewhere this offseason for more years and more money than the Red Sox are willing. Adding Buck, who can start primarily but also be subbed out for Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is still looking to breakout in the major leagues.

Martinez is drawing interest from the Tigers, but the same sources believe the White Sox will make a run at Victor Martinez because he could fill any of three holes they need filled at catcher, first base, and designated hitter. The Brewers may also be in a similar position if they can find the money to spend before the negotiations pick up to aggressively.
