Mets Hire Terry Collins
The Mets have hired Terry Collins as their new manager for the 2011 season. Bob Melvin will likely not stay with the team, and Chip Hale will likely stay with the team. Wally Backman will be asked to stay.
Collins, a former Angels and Astros manager, worked in the Mets organzation in 2010 as the minor-league field coordinator.
Collins was 444-434 in his MLB managerial career so far, but has not avoided controversey. In 1999 Collins resigned as manager of the Angels with 29 games left when players tried to get him fired. In 2002 Collins was charged with DUI.
Collins' Astros finished in 2nd place all three years with him managing the team.
In my opinion the Mets made the wrong choice, as Melvin is the calmer, less risky of the main two candidates. Collins was hated by the Angels players and fans, and Melvin won manager of the year in 2007.

Surprised
Knowing how he went out with the Angels, I am surprised the Mets made this decision. I would have went with Hale or Backman. I am not a Mets Fan. I wonder how they feel about this?

Most Mets fans are indifferent
Many who wanted Backman are furious, but these are people who believe in “clutch” and think that excessive bunting is a good thing.
Few people really seem to care about how he left the Angels because it was 11 years ago.
I would have gone with Samuel L. Jackson. Why? Inglewood Jack!

Inglewood Jack!
Inglewooood….up to no good! lol. Well I would have been one of the furious ones. Living here in L.A. I read alot of Collins and his problems with his players. It was not a good ending for him. Your own captain jumping ship on you? Collins better come out with some fire quick and make a good impression. If the Mets come out the gate slow and struggle…..the NY media will tear him a new culo.

His problems with players was 11 years ago
So I think that you have to at least consider the possibility that he has changed in that time.
If the Mets come out of the gate slow, I can see Sandy Alderson stepping in to take the heat.

very true. You have a point. It was long ago. But as a player, I would think there would be some doubt in the back of a few of their minds. And I do believe people can change. I sure thought alot different and didn’t have as much patience now as I did 10 years ago. Good luck to the Mets. Would love to see them give that division some comepetition. Tired of the Phils and I never liked the Braves. Dodger fan here!
