Giants Sign Miguel Tejada
The San Francisco Giants have moved swiftly in replacing Juan Uribe. The defending World Series Champions have signed Miguel Tejada to a one year, $6.5 million deal.
The Giants were widely believed to be the front runners in the Jason Bartlett trade sweepstakes, but instead chose to sign Tejada. This means that Bartlett is still available, and should be traded to a different team soon.
Tejada spent the 2010 season playing for the Orioles and then the Padres, and hit .269/.312/.381 on the season with 15 home runs and 71 RBI's.
Tejada's career batting average against the Giants is the 2nd lowest for him vs. any MLB team (lowest against the Braves) and Tejada has hit .297/.319/.396 career at AT&T Park.

Might be overpaying a bit, but it’s not a great market and he is a good fit.

Yeah that sums it up pretty well
I hated the move at 1st, but after thinking about it, it’s fine

wow! 6.5 mil????
geez, that’s sure is a helluva lot to pay a player way past his prime. But like Brandon said, it’s not a great market out there. Look at what the Dodgers paid Uribe. 7 mil per year for 3 years. Kinda high I think, but he will be worth it.

Return on investment
Tejada signs slightly cheaper than Uribe and for only 1 year not 3. He should have improved performance over 2010 numbers. I look for 80/20/90/.275 or better. If he falls short of those numbers then he could drop to 7th or 8th in order (suggest 6th at beginning). He could help Giants prepare for the future with a young guy. All reports indicate his big years were chemically aided. I suspect it takes a year or 3 for an older player to return to his potential once off chemicals. Tejada is usually a good clubhouse guy and is willing to play hurt which I admire in this era of prima donnas. I believe signing has big upside potential.
Yeah, sure...
…if you just look at his offensive potential, it’s not bad.
But factoring in his massive decline in defensive ability, then zoinks! It’s borderline passable.
And that’s because, let ‘s face it—Tejada just can’t play SS anymore, which begs the question: Where do they play him? 3B? Well, then what about Pablo Sandoval? If reports are to be believed, then the Giants are going to take a hard line on weight/conditioning with Sandoval, and if so, he could be optioned to AAA at some point during the 2011 season. So in that case, having Tejada is good—they can play him at 3B.
But then what about SS? I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to trade for someone like Brendan Ryan of the Cardinals, who got tendered a contract by the Cardinals and may be expendable, with both Ryan Theriot and Tyler Greene around. Ryan could back up Sanchez at 2B and play SS, too. So, they could have:
1B—Huff/Sandoval/Ishikawa
2B—Sanchez/Ryan
SS—Ryan/Tejada
3B—Tejada/Sandoval
(Yes, Sandoval spelling Huff at 1B occasionally, or perhaps going to the OF, too?)
And that’s without even thinking about Brandon Belt. Oy vey!
