New York Mets pitcher Hisanori Takahashi has elected to become a free agent after he and the team failed to work out a contract according to the New York Daily News.
Takahashiwent 10-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 53 appearances in his first season with the Metsand in the league as both a starting and relief pitcher. Takahashi played in a Japanese league prior to joining the Mets last season.
He reportedly wanted a multi-year deal with at least 5 million dollars earned annually and 2 million guaranteed. New Mets GM Sandy Alderson and Takahashi's agent, Arm Tellem decided to extend the contract deadline from earlier this week till this Friday. As a part of a new rule, Takahashiis now unable to sign with the Mets anymore until May 15th, which should cap his career as a Met.
Takahashi joins lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano as Mets players set to hit the market.
