Blue Jays sign Angel Hechevarria
Hardball Talk is reporting that the Blue Jays and Cuban shortstop Angel Hechevarria have agreed to a 10 million dollar contract. This is a nice snag for new GM Alex Anthopoulos.
Hechevarria was heavily courted by the Yankees, Cubs, and Angels, but opted for the Blue Jays who offered him 2 million more than his Cuban counterpart Jose Iglesias, who signed for 8.1 million last year with the Red Sox.
The 21-year old shortstop has nice range and a good arm at short, along with a solid smooth swing at the plate. His skills are raw, but Hechevarria could rise quick through the Jays organization.

Hero of Canadian Labour
THIS JUST IN…
Earlier today an MLB insider revealed that Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos has petitioned the federal government to strike a “Hero of Canadian Labour” medal at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg in case Cuban Angel Hechevarria ever sticks at the major league level.
This development—written into Hechevarria’s contract—is part of the organization’s overall strategy of making its players feel as comfortable as possible in order to maximize on-field results.
The unique contractual rider was included to provide Hechevarria with an emotional bridge to his new home in Canada from his communist-run native land. Cuba, the remaining Worker’s Paradise in the Western Hemisphere, rewards outstanding employment production with Hero of Cuban Labour medals instead of capitalist-style cash bonuses.
