Sunday Morning Quick Hits

  • The Nationals have officially decided that shortstop Ian Desmond will be the teams Opening Day starter. Desmond is hitting .278 this spring with a .339 on-base percentage. He posted a .280 average in 82 at-bats last season.
  • The Blue Jays cut ties with speedy outfielder Joey Gathright after hitting only .167 this spring. He couldn't show off his speed if he couldn't get on base, only stealing two this spring. He should find a job somewhere in the next month or so.
  • The Detroit Free Press is reporting that outfielder Austin Jackson will be the teams center fielder and leadoff hitter to open the season. Jackson did everything right this spring, posting a .339 average in 56 at-bats.
  • The East Valley Tribune is reporting that Ian Kennedy has earned a spot in the starting rotation. Kennedy posted a 2.79 ERA this spring.
  • The Dodgers have awarded outfielder Garrett Anderson with the left-handed spot on the bench.
