Orlando Hudson Thinks Dye Is Black

"Hey mister black guy, can you get Mauer to sign this for me?"

According to this Jeff Passan article at Yahoo! Sports, Orlando Hudson has a problem with Jermaine Dye being unemployed...

"You see guys like Jermaine Dye without a job," Minnesota Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson said Monday. "Guy with [27 home runs and 81 RBIs] and can’t get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there, no? You’ve got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5, $6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can’t get a job. A guy like Gary Sheffield, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can’t get a job. … "We both know what it is. You’ll get it right. You’ll figure it out. I’m not gonna say it because then I’ll be in [trouble]."

O-Dog, you mad.  Seriously?  The reason Dye doesn't have a job is because he's black and it has nothing to do with his .179 average after the all star break last season?  Or his below average defense?  Or because he won't play for less than a few million dollars?  I'm assuming Hudson is referring to Jim Edmonds when he talks about players who miss an entire year and then come back and get $5 million.  However, Edmonds signed with the Brewers for $850,000 (with incentives that can raise the total to $2.6M), would Dye sign for that much?  Apparently not.  It's rumored he turned down $4M to play in Washington

MLB.com lists 25 unsigned free agents.  Of those 25, two are african-americans, Dye and Gary Sheffield.  Race isn't the reason Dye is still sitting at home.  Dye is watching Yo Gabba Gabba for the same reason ultra-whiteboy Jarrod Washburn is...unrealistic salary demands.

i read this on yahoo this morning

what a shame, maybe if he cared so much he would quit that way Dye can take his spot! Regardless this is a joke and completely uncalled for to begin the season. Im sure you wont hear anyone else complain of being out of work because of their color, it would really start a problem then.

Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

He isn't looking for work too hard

He turned down the Nats. Race plays no part in this. His career is on the decline. Same reaseon Carlos Delgodo is without a team. And Carlos is, oh wait, black as well.

Dye will catch on when he brings his asking price down a few notches.

I think Orlando is projecting. . .

His arguments were moronic. If the best examples, he can come up to show organizational racism are Jermaine Dye and Gary Sheffield, then he clearly needs to rethink his position. The former is a has been and the latter is a total jerk. They both want to paid more than they are worth, because of “respect.” I’m absolutely sick of players who demand respect, but then do not behave in a manner worthy of respect.

My personal opinion, is that Orlando Hudson is pissed off that he was forced to take one year offers the past two seasons. He’s pissed that he was benched during the last half of 2009 in favor of Ronnie Belliard of all people. He’s pissed that he wasn’t offered a multi-year deal. He’s probably pissed that he’s playing in Minnesota. He’s pissed about all of these things and he’s venting on the whole racism issue.

I don't feel bad for Dye

He turned down a great contract from Washington because he thought he could do better. He should have been grateful for the offer since his production stank after the All-Star last year.

Amen

The longer he sits, the less money he’ll get. His own decision.

He turned down the Cubs, too.

Instead, the Cubs signed Xavier Nady.

Um, Orlando...looked in a mirror lately?

Hate to break it to you, Orlando, but you’re black. And you were a free agent. And the Twins paid you over $5 million bucks to play that little boy’s game you love. Not only that, but the rap on you was that you’d lost a step in the field, and so far this season you have indeed been a step short on a few grounders that Alexi Casilla or Punto would have reached. The Twins gave you a fat paycheck anyway, not because you’re black, but because, unlike Punto and Casilla, your batting average is higher than your weight.

It’s one thing to raise accusations of racism in baseball, but it’s ironic when you yourself are the best argument against your claim. That’s not to say there’s no racism is baseball (of course there is, it’s everywhere), but in this case I think Dye and Sheffield are unemployed because they’re past their prime but still asking for prime money.

Meanwhile, I hope you have a great season, because now you’re on the Twins. Go Twins!
