Mets may release Gary Matthews Jr.
Mets officials discussed among other topics the status of outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. on the 25-man roster. Matthews is only hitting .173 in 29 games this season with no home runs and 20 strike outs. Matthews' only other competition in the outfield is Angel Pagan, who is hitting .276 with 2 home runs and is considered the more athletic of the two.
Matthews is 35 and has 23 million dollars left on his contract through 2011. However, the Mets are responsible for only 2 million dollars of his contract, so the next team that signs him, if he gets released, would likely only have to pay him close to the major league minimum.
If Matthews get released, what team do you see picking him up?
