The Pitcher and Player of the Month awards are out and are generating little controversy. All four players selected distinguished themselves from the rest in the first month of the season, and are on pace for a big season.
In the American League, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano took the honor, posting a lead leaguing .400 average and 8 home runs. Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano took the pitchers award after posting a 3-0 record with a 0.93 ERA in four starts.
In the National League, Diamondbacks second baseman Kelly Johnson takes the award after posting monster numbers in his first month with the Dbacks. Johnson is hitting .310 with 9 home runs in 23 games this season with a .404 on-base percentage.
The NL West also received the pitcher of the month honors, with Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez taking the award. Jimenez's first month included a no-hitter, but he ended the month with a 0.79 ERA and 5-0 record. Not bad.
