Orioles' Kevin Millwood open to trade to Mets?

Photo

Brian Blanco - AP

Orioles pitcher Kevin Millwood told reporters he would not mind pitching in New York, which should come as no surprise as he is 0-5 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. He is averaging about seven innings per game and has not been pitching bad by any means.

However, the Orioles cannot put up consistent run support, pushing them farther down in the standings and putting them out of contention before anyone in Baltimore even realizes the season has started. M

Millwood last pitched in the NL East in 2004, but would probably fair well in the pitchers friendly Citi Field. Expect the Orioles to trade high payroll pieces that do not fit into their future plans.... meaning, those not named Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Brian Matusz, and Chris Tillman.

Millwood to Mets

I’m all for it – I hope MacPhail trades lots of vets before the deadline to give more depth to the organization in the minors, getting quality infielder and outfielder prospects in return.
Luke Scott, Tejada, Wigginton, Guthrie, Adkins(for a bag of balls or Jay Gibbons…same thing), and even Adam Jones can all go. I’d like to keep Itzuris as he’d be a great utility infielder…and Reimold, who deserves a second chance eventually.

Also, I’d like to promote the AAA guys we have at 1B, 2B, and 3B and see if any can figure out how to stay in the bigleagues. The future isnt now – its still in a couple years. Might as well get ’em started on learning how to hit mlb pitching.

Also, I’d like Crowley gone and a better hitting coach in place, as well as a manager who is more winning oriented(like Larry Bowa maybe).

Surely we can get some quality specs in return for some of these guys. What about 3B Gordon and 1B Ka’ailue from KC? Just an idea.

Why promote the AAA bats?

Hughes has already been up, Snyder has had plenty of trouble this year, Bell can’t hit lefties to save his life and may have to give up the switch hitting, and Paco Figueroa is 27 and not much of a prospect at all. Snyder and Bell could def. be useful in the future but clearly have more to work on in AAA and Hughes and Figueroa are really just organizational filler. I don’t think bringing up any of these guys right away will help us now or in the future.

The problem with trading Millwood

comes from what type of FA will he be in the offseason (Type A or Type B) and the danger that if you offer him arbitration, he accepts. I think you would have to package Millwood with another player (say Luke Scott or Ty Wigginton) in order to get any type of high upside prospect. And even then, would such a prospect be worth more than the potential draft pick you could get should you keep him all season and he walks?

That being said, I’m all for trading Millwood. Jake Arrieta is doing very well in AAA and he is nearly ready to make the jump up to the majors. Trading Millwood would open up the spot in the rotation for Arrieta. I just don’t hold out much hope for any significant return coming back to the O’s as a result. But of course, anything better than Chris Ray makes the transaction a win.
