Trade Deadline Notes

  • The Chicago White Sox inquired about the availability of Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez, suggesting that the Nationals and White Sox talks over Adam Dunn are not going as well as planned. The Dodgers rebuffed their attempts to get Manny, in large part because he is still on the disabled list. The White Sox are expected to pursue Ramirez, making me think an August trade could happen. One AL rival executive said he would be surprised if the Sox "didn't make another move" before the deadline.
  • The Mets and Cubs discussed the possibility of sending Oliver Perez to the Cubs for Carlos Zambrano, but the Cubs would prefer to retain Zambrano for the final two months of the season. The report came out as Perez and Luis Castillo for Zambrano, but there would have had to be extensive discussions regarding the players contracts.
  • The Yankees are looking into trading for Blue Jays reliever Jason Frasor.
  • One NL source said multiple teams have inquired about the availability of Cubs reliever Sean Marshall, but have been told he is not available. The Red Sox, Rays, and Padres have all checked with the Cubs on Marshall.
  • The Tigers and Rays are among teams still looking to add Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn.
  • The Diamondbacks are still looking to move Kelly Johnson and Adam LaRoche. A team that misses out on Dunn could pursue LaRoche, who is probably not going to command much in return. The Rockies are believed to be interested in Kelly Johnson, but it is nothing serious as of yet.
  • The Cubs are closing in on a deal that would send Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers in exchange for second baseman Blake DeWitt and a pitching prospect.
