Will the Yankees re-sign Derek Jeter to mega-deal?

Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter's disappointing season is going to make re-signing the franchise star much more difficult this offseason. Jeter, a .314 career hitter, is hitting .264 this season with 10 home runs and a .331 on-base percentage. He is hitting just .245 since the All-Star break and is 4-for-21 in September.

The process for re-signing Jeter probably would be easier if he was having a typical "Jeter season," but this drop off is forcing the Yankees to re-evaluate the situation.

"Under ordinary circumstances the drop-off from a typical Jeter season would be significant enough to make management reassess what it should pay him," Harper writes. "Obviously Jeter is an extraordinary case, but how extraordinary?"

In terms of length of a contract, Jeter is most definitely not going to get more than a four year deal. Anything more than that would be counter-productive for the Yankees, both on offense and defense. If the Yankees lock him up into his forties, the team will go from having the best right-side of the infield to potentially one of the worst, with aging veterans Jeter and A-Rod. 

The Yankees seem pretty content with the current situation, in large part because there have not been any discussions to sway the sentiment one way or another.

When it is all said and done, Jeter will be a Yankee.
