Red Sox Trade Kyle Weiland and Jed Lowrie to Astros for Reliever Mark Melancon
The Boston Red Sox have traded pitcher Kyle Weiland to the Houston Astros in exchange for reliever Mark Melancon, first reported by Jerry Crasnick and confirmed by Ken Rosenthal.
Ken Rosenthal is now reporting that the Red Sox are still in the running for Andrew Bailey and Ryan Madson.
Alex Speier is reporting that Jed Lowrie could be part of the deal, and Rosenthal suggests the Sox may not be done looking for relievers:

Doubt this is last bullpen move for #RedSox. Have actively pursued trade for #Athletics' Bailey, can't be ruled out on Madson.

I don't like this much
Lowrie and Weiland could be key pieces in a trade for Gonzalez or something else. To give them away for a meh relief pitcher seems silly.

There is absolutely no way they could be key pieces. The A’s want the world for Gonzalez. The two would be at best throw ins.

They would not be key pieces
But be a help. It will take Middlebrooks + Reddick + More prospects but if they wanted young arms, Weiland was about all Boston had.

Position Prospects
The A’s really need position players – And honestly 3B is the biggest need right now. Arms are kind of all the same at the moment – Weiland was probably similar in quality to some of the excess arms they already have, so that’s not really a big loss.
If they want to acquire Gio and Bailey, I would say honestly that it probably needs to be Middlebrooks, one of Reddick or Kalish, and probably 2 more of the prospects that Sickels just rated B-.

Well the Lowrie part hasn't been confirmed yet
But yeah, the relief market this year is both funny and baffling.
It has been now
by Rosenthal and Speier. Apparently the Red Sox are still in on Bailey, so giving up this much for Melancon doesn’t make sense to me.

Strange
I’m not sure why they would still want Bailey after paying that price for Melancon.
I’m definitely sure that the A’s should keep pushing to get Middlebrooks as a part of a Bailey trade.

Bailey would at this point destroy the farm system
kind of a tough situation now.

Not sure why everyone is so negative about this for the Red Sox.
Wieland has no future with the Red Sox, and really isn’t very good.
Lowrie likely had very few suitors, most of which wouldn’t give much for him.
Packaging the two for a controllable set up man is smart.
