Semi-shocking news out of the American League Central Division today, as the Twins have traded outfielder Delmon Young to the Tigers for left-handed pitcher Cole Nelson and a player to be named later.
Young was a highly touted prospect, drafted with the 1st overall pick in 2003. However he has yet to deliver on that promise as a slightly below average batter and a quite terrible defender, mostly in left field. Young is still relatively...young, though, still only 25. There is a possibility that he puts it all together for the Tigers and becomes the all-star the Rays saw when they drafted him.
Nelson was drafted in 2010 by the Tigers and has spent all year in Single-A Lakeland. He will be reassigned to Single-A Fort Myers for the Twins.
The Twins will recall Rene Tosoni from Triple-A Rochester. The Tigers have optioned the fortunately-named Will Rhymes to Triple-A.
The final player in the trade must be named on or before October 15, 2011.
