Update (8:15 PM EST): The Giants have confirmed the release of pitcher Clayton Tanner, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News. However, Giants general manager Brian Sabean called it a paper move. Sabean added that the team is in the process of re-signing the pitcher.
The Giants announced today that they've released left-handed pitcher Clayton Tanner, days after he had been designated for assignment by the club. Eric Surkamp recently took Tanner's place on San Francisco's 40-man roster, as the Giants called up the top prospect over the weekend.
Tanner, 23, hasn't reached the majors yet. After being a third-round pick out of high school in 2006, Tanner reached Double-A last year but still hasn't left the level yet. He's pitched much better in Double-A this season, but he's still likely to be held back in the future by underwhelming raw stuff.
