Ricky Romero vs David Price
Now i have these arguments all the time with my friend. I a jays fan argue that Romero is as good as Price. He seems to think its not even close at all. I think they are both close but i definitly think Romero deserves some respect.
Here are Prices stats after 3 years:
W L ERA CG WHIP SO Avg
2009 10 7 4.42 0 1.35 102 .241
2010 19 6 2.73 2 1.19 188 .221
2011 12 12 3.36 0 1.12 208 .229
Total numbers 41 25 3.34 2 1.19 510 .227
Now lets compare, here is Romero's numbers:
2009 13 9 4.30 0 1.52 141 .284
2010 14 9 3.73 3 1.29 174 .242
2011 15 9 3.02 4 1.16 169 . 217
Total numbers 42 28 3.61 7 1.31 484 .246
Now as a guy who fallows Romero alot one of my favorit pitchers, i realise that Price may be a bit better. But the fact that my friend says it isnt close makes me argue this and show the stats. It's definitly close and isnt an obvious pick if you ask me.

I'd take Price
But Romero has quietly become a great pitcher.
Price has slightly better raw stuff and is capable of missing more bats. As his command improves, Price will lengthen the gap between the two pitchers. It’s easy to forget that Romero is actually older than Price.

agreed Romero is a year older.
I think right now Romero is a pitcher who has good stuff. PRice as of now is getting by on raw stuff, when he becomes a pitcher he will be excelent.
Price keeps improving, though.
They were close in 2010, but Price took a step forward this season, and I think there’s a chance that he has another gear, too.

id say romero took a better step this year.
having a better record on a worse team, better era better whip.
I wouldn't look at WHIP or ERA in a one-year sample
Price beats Romero in every metric that tries to take the luck/circumstance out of a pitcher’s ERA.
SIERA: 3.07 to 3.62
FIP: 3.16 to 4.10
xFIP: 3.25 to 3.75
I’d say that they were similar in terms of production in 2010, but Price has taken a big step forward this year. His ERA has only gone up because his BABIP is up 11 points and his HR/FB is up 3.5%.

HR/FB%
Ya, it’s up 3.5% from last year but that’s because he posted a 6.5 HR/FB% in 2010. That was a 4.6% drop from the year before, and he’s pitching in the AL East. I don’t think a 9% HR/FB% is that out of the norm for Price, maybe right where it should be.
I’d still take Price over Romero. Price continues to get better, and has taken a huge step forward this year by lowering his walk rate.

Never said his HR/FB isn't where it should be
But his ERA hasn’t gone up because his performance has taken a step back. He’s gotten better, but regression in BABIP and HR/FB have made his ERA go up.
Price continues to refine his game and given the sizable advantage he has in raw stuff, I think it’d be nuts to take Romero. Romero’s a great pitcher, I’ve been one of his biggest supporters since his emergence a couple years ago. But Price is a step up.

yea i agree with you sorta.
Romero has good stuff and he has figurred it out so he is a great pitcher. Price has amazingstuff and hasnt figured it out all yet. But when he does watch out.
How has Price not figured it out yet?
He’s better than Romero is every single metric other than ERA. He misses more bats. He walks less guys. He induces more infield flies. And even though he doesn’t get as many grounders as Romero, he’s been allowing less homers, too.
Price is a better pitcher with better stuff. It’s not a knock against Romero; Price is arguably a top-10 pitcher in the entire game.

i agree im just saying.
I think ROmero has reached his full potential. And price as scary as it is hasnt, i beleieve he will become better.
Yeah, that's fair.
But that’s kind of the entire point: Romero is near his ceiling, and already Price is performing better. Price hasn’t even reached his ceiling yet and he’s already performing at a higher level than Romero.
