Larry Stone from the Seattle Times says that January 18 is an important date for the Fielder to Seattle negotiations. That is the day when the Texas Rangers will find out if they can work out a deal with Yu Darvish. If they cannot, then they have $100 extra million to spend, something that the Mariners likely do not have.
Ryan Divish from the Tacoma News Tribune says that while reports are that the Mariners are down to $3-4 million left to spend, that agents are always telling reporters things for their own benefit so to go into knowing this with an open mind, and that the Mariners very well may have more.
With almost a month until pitchers and catchers report to Florida and Arizona, this week could be telling for Fielder.
