Rangers Meeting with Roy Oswalt Today

Photo

The Texas Rangers are set to meet Roy Oswalt today, and will potentially discuss what it will take to sign him as well as whether he'd actually be a good fit under the club's rigorous demands placed on their starters. Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram suggests that's not automatically a given, noting both some hesitation on the Rangers' part, going so far as to say they are questioning his dedication, and Oswalt's recent injuries.

Wilson further notes that bringing in Oswalt could set off a domino effect that launches Uehara elsewhere. And in the background of all this is a St. Louis club that appears ready to sign Oswalt when he decides:

  • Roy Oswalt must deliver right answers to join Rangers - Jeff Wilson | Star-Telegram
"St. Louis is said to be the only other club Oswalt is considering, and various reports have the Cardinals scrambling to meet his asking price of $10 million on a one-year contract. That's out of the Rangers' price range, perhaps even if they can trade Koji Uehara and the $4 million he will make this season. Uehara appears to be a man without a spot in the bullpen with Alexi Ogando expected to rejoin the late-inning mix after the signing of Yu Darvish."
  • Rangers and Roy Oswalt to Meet Tomorrow - MLB Daily Dish
It was reported yesterday that they had a meeting scheduled, as long as he remained on the free agent market. Oswalt and the Cardinals seem to have reached a standstill, wanting the Cardinals to raise their offer by about $2.5 million. The Cardinals may still move Kyle McLellan to make the room. If they move the salary needed, then the Cardinals will likely sign Oswalt.
