The St. Louis Cardinals have officially removed left-hander Jaime Garcia from their Division Series roster, replacing him with rookie right-hander Shelby Miller, reports Katie Carrera of the Washington Post:

"With this roster against the Nationals, felt like we have more of a need with potentially a pitcher that could go a long ways," [manager Mike] Matheny explained. "Especially after we just took Lance Lynn out by him throwing the amount pitches that he threw yesterday.

"We would need multiple innings and we would need a guy who has worked up to that, and that would be Shelby at this time."

Garcia started Game 2 for the Cardinals but only lasted two innings before leaving with shoulder discomfort. An MRI taken on Monday revealed that Garcia has a strain in rotator cuff, an injury that will likely keep the left-hander sidelined for the remainder of the playoffs.

The 22-year-old Miller, the top pitching prospect in the Cardinals' organization, will likely work out of the bullpen. If St. Louis advances to the Championship Series, Lance Lynn may move into Garcia's starter role.
