The Colorado Rockies will interview first baseman Jason Giambi for their open managerial position sometime in the very near future, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post:

Veteran player Jason Giambi will interview for the Rockies vacant managerial job, though no date has been set. He will be the last in-house candidate before the Rockies talk to other candidates. There is no timetable for a hiring.

The 41-year-old Giambi, who has spent the last three and a half years in Colorado as a bench player, has no professional managerial experience but has worked with young Rockies hitters over the past few seasons and regularly talked strategy with former manager Jim Tracy, according to Renck.

The Rockies began their interview process last week with bench coach and former Montreal Expos manager Tom Runnells, taking two days to speak with him about the job. Giambi would have talked with the Rockies already as well but is still recovering from a hernia surgery he underwent last week.

Giambi is expected to be the last in-house candidate interviewed for the manager vacancy before the club moves on to outside possibilities. The Rockies' Triple-A manager Stu Cole and team special assistant Vinny Castilla were rumored to be candidates at one time, but neither is expected to contend for the job now.
