After declining his 2013 option, the Oakland Athletics are discussion a new contract with shortstop Stephen Drew, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com:
The Oakland A's are talking to free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew about a new contract, though it isn't known what their chances to sign him might be considering he will be free to sign with any team.
The A’s acquired Drew from the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. The veteran shortstop played well for the team following the trade, but Oakland ultimately decided his $10 million option for 2013 was too pricey.
Throughout the season it was reported that the A’s would be interested in re-signing Drew to a lesser contract if they did decline his option. Heyman reports there is interest on the A’s part, especially given the fact that the free agent market for shortstops is weak. The success Oakland experienced this season combined with their young lineup filled with up-and-coming players makes the A’s a desirable landing spot for free agents, according to Heyman.
After joining the A’s mid-season, Drew hit .250/.326/.382 with five doubles and five home runs over 152 at-bats. He owns a career line of .265/.328/.433 over seven major league seasons.
