The New York Mets and third baseman David Wright have made their first moves toward a new contract extension, with the Mets making an offer and Wright's agents making an immediate counter-offer, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

The Mets, trying to lock up their franchise player, have offered third baseman David Wright a contract extension, according to major league sources.

Wright’s agents, Sam and Seth Levinson, responded by sending the team a counter-offer, sources said.

Both sides have declined to comment on the financial specifics of their offers, so we are left to speculate at the moment, but Rosenthal believes that Wright could seek a contract larger than Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5 million deal -- to now the biggest in club history.

The Mets are attempting to re-sign knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to a contract extension as well, but it is unknown whether the cost of a deal with Wright would affect their dealings with Dickey. Both players are under contract through next season -- Wright for $16 million, Dickey for $5 million -- but New York wants to lock both players down long-term.
