The Seattle Mariners are "weighing a run" at free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton, team president Chuck Armstrong has confirmed with Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com:

"[GM Jack Zduriencik] is looking at it," Armstrong said. "We are going to have more money to spend. And we do need offense."

Heyman notes that the Mariners are simply "mulling" a run at Hamilton, and cautions readers that "it’s very early." Seattle is looking at corner players to improve their offense which ranked as the worst in the majors last season.

Hamilton is the top free agent position player available this winter, and as such he figures to command a hefty contract. He’s reportedly seeking a deal in the seven-year, $175 million range, and while he may not receive it, he is certain to get paid.

Last season for the Texas Rangers Hamilton hit .285/.354/.577 with 31 doubles and 43 home runs. He owns a career line of .304/.363/.549 over six years in the majors.

The Mariners are one of several teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates, to express some level of interest in Hamilton.
