Russo’s new deal with the Tigers includes an invitation to major league spring training, according to Morosi.
Russo was selected in the 20th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. He came into professional baseball playing second and third base for the Yankees’ rookie-level squad, but he moved all over the infield as he progressed through the minor leagues.
He’s spent the past four seasons playing for New York’s Triple-A affiliate, hitting a combined .285/.353/.370 at that level.
Russo made his major league debut for the Yankees last season, hitting .184/.245/.224 with two doubles over 49 at-bats. The 28-year-old spent a majority of the season with the Yankees’ Triple-A club, hitting .284/.358/.351 with 21 doubles, three triples and 15 stolen bases in 20 attempts over 402 at-bats.
