Braves claim outfielder Jordan Schafer from Astros

Bob Levey

After a season and a half in Houston, Schafer returns to the organization that drafted him.

The Atlanta Braves have claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer off of waivers from the Houston Astros, the team has announced:

Schafer, 26, was drafted by the Braves in the third round of the 2005 draft and briefly manned center field for the club before being traded -- along with several prospects -- to the Astros for Michael Bourn last July. With Bourn hitting free agency this Saturday, bringing Schafer back into the fold gives Atlanta options at center field if they are not able to re-sign Bourn this winter.

Schafer is a career .221/.305/.301 hitter with eight home runs in nearly nine hundred plate appearances across three big league seasons. The speedy center fielder played in a career-high one hundred six games in 2012, hitting .211/.297/.294 with four home runs and racking up twenty-seven stolen bases.
