The Cubs are among the teams talking to the Angels about a trade involving right-hander Dan Haren.
The Red Sox have been known to be seeking a deal for Haren, but the Cubs are a new team. There are said to be others, as well.
The Angels are attempting to trade Haren and his $15.5 million option for 2013. They don’t want to pay him this amount to pitch for them next season, but they realize he does have a market given his track record. If the team is able to deal him they could receive something in return and potentially avoid paying his $3.5 million buyout.
A decision on Haren’s buyout is due today, and there have been reports that he is expecting to be dealt. The Boston Red Sox have also been tied to Haren, and others figure to be involved considering the 32-year-old’s impressive career numbers. Over 10 years in the majors the right-hander owns a career ERA of 3.66 with 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings and 1.9 walks per nine innings.
