Lance Berkman rumors: Red Sox, Phillies, Rays, Astros

The Big Puma has garnered interest from several clubs, but nothing yet to pull him out of retirement mode.

Free-agent first baseman Lance Berkman has drawn interest from several clubs – including the Red Sox, Phillies, Rays and Astros – but has yet to receive an offer that has made him re-think retirement, reports Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle:

While he decides whether to play another season, free-agent first baseman Lance Berkman is hearing from several major league teams.

The Red Sox, Phillies, Rays and Astros have expressed interest in what Berkman described as "tire-kicking mode."

"I’m waiting to be blown away by an offer," Berkman said Monday after conducting batting practice in his new role as volunteer assistant coach at Rice. "If I’m not, I’ll be out here."

Berkman is reportedly seeking a two-year deal, but may have a hard time finding one given his recent injury history. After a stellar 2011 with the Cardinals that was reminiscent of Berkman in his prime, the 36-year-old had this past season cut short by a series of knee injuries, limiting the Big Puma to just thirty-two games on the season.

Berkman visited with Astros owner Jim Crane last week and has spoken to new manager Bo Porter, but it is not believed Houston has made a formal offer at this time.
