The Boston Red Sox have designated five players – right-handers Zach Stewart, David Carpenter and Sandy Rosario, and infielders Danny Valencia and Ivan De Jesus – for assignment to make room for prospects needing protection from the Rule 5 draft, the team has announced:
The Boston Red Sox today added six players to the Major League roster...
To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Ivan De Jesus, third baseman Danny Valencia and right-handed pitchers David Carpenter, Sandy Rosario and Zach Stewart were designated for assignment.
The Red Sox acquired all five players by trade or waiver claim over the past several months, but Stewart and DeJesus is the only player to actually see playing time with the Sox. The Stewart was the second piece (of two) in the June trade that sent Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox. Stewart made two starts for Boston late in the season, but lasted only five and two-thirds innings across the two games, giving up fourteen runs.
Ivan DeJesus was one of several players to find his way to Boston from the Dodgers in August’s blockbuster Crawford/Gonzalez/Beckett deal, around the same time that Valencia arrived at Fenway in a minor deal with the Minnesota Twins.
Carpenter came to Boston along with manager John Farrell last month in exchange for shortstop Mike Aviles, and Rosario was claimed on waivers shortly before.
