Scott Rolen may play in 2013

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Scott Rolen has informed the Cincinnati Reds he may play in 2013, and Cincinnati is open to the veteran returning to the club in some capacity.

Third baseman Scott Rolen is now a free-agent, but the third baseman is not ready to decide if he wants to continue his career at this time. According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, Rolen has informed the Cincinnati Reds of where he currently stands regarding his future and the Reds are open to the veteran returning to the club in some capacity, if he so chooses to continue his playing career.

Rolen, who will be 38 in April, has dealt with lingering injuries the past two seasons with the Reds, limiting him to just 157 games the past two years. In 2012, Rolen got on base at an under 32% clip and saw his slugging drop below .400 on the season.

Cincinnati currently has Todd Frazier as their starting third baseman for next season and his job should be safe even if Rolen chooses to return, because Rolen simply isn't the same player he once was.

However, the Reds do have a reputation of keeping veteran players on the 25-man roster regardless of their production, instead looking for veteran presence in the clubhouse.
