Yankees interested in Jeff Keppinger

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Yankees have had interest in acquiring Jeff Keppinger in each of the past two seasons, so could the third time prove to be the charm for the Bronx Bombers?

With shortstop Derek Jeter and third baseman Alex Rodriguez in their late 30s, the New York Yankees have a need to acquire backup infield help perhaps more than any other team in the majors. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, free-agent Jeff Keppinger could be the answer for the Bronx Bombers.

Keppinger, 32, is a versatile right-handed hitter who can play any position in the infield that isn't catcher or pitcher. He is also a valuable commodity at the plate, specifically against left-handed pitchers, as Keppinger owns a career triple slash line of .376/.402/.521 in his career against southpaws.

As Rosenthal notes, "Yankees had the second-highest number of plate appearances in the majors against lefties last season," meaning Keppinger could prove to be more valuable to New York than other teams.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashamn has tried to acquire the versatile infielder in each of the past two seasons, writes Rosenthal, so will the third time prove to be the charm? Cashman will be hoping so.
