B.J. Upton looking to make decision on where to sign this week

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The 28-year-old free agent center fielder has been wined and dined, and is reportedly close to making his decision.

B.J. Upton could make a decision on where to sign very soon, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Upton is looking to make a decision this week, with both the Braves (who brought in former manager Bobby Cox to impress during his visit) and Phillies considering him their top choice.

Earlier this week, both the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies indicated signing a center fielder was their top priority. The Washington Nationals have also expressed interest in the 28-year-old, however, we've seen enough players sign with dark horses the past few years to know you can never rule out the mystery team.

Upton made $7 million in 2012, and declined Tampa Bay's one-year $13.3 million offer earlier this offseason. He hit .246/.298/.454 with 28 home runs and 31 stolen bases in 146 games last season.

Here's how Bryan Grosnick wrapped up his review of Utpon's time with the Rays for SB Nation Tampa Bay:

Though he never completely fulfilled his tantalizing potential (by not staying at shortstop or becoming a truly premier hitter), Upton already sits as one of the five most productive position players in Devil Rays / Rays history. His consistent presence will certainly be missed by fans of the team.

Other top center field options on the free agent market include Michael Bourn and Angel Pagan.
