Yankees rumors: New York 'confident' it can re-sign Ichiro

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The veteran outfielder wants to return to the Bronx for a second season.

The New York Yankees are "confident" they can re-sign free-agent outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

The Yankees are confident they can re-sign international star Ichiro Suzuki after his very productive two-plus months in the Bronx...

New York expects to bring him back, but like some other aging greats, he'll have to take a significant cut from the $18 million he made last year.

It was reported yesterday that Ichiro is willing to wait for an offer from the Yankees before entertaining offers from other teams, so New York's chances of coming to an agreement with the future Hall of Famer seem good.

Ichiro looked like a shell of his former self during the first half of 2012, hitting just .261/.288/.353 in ninety-nine games for the Mariners. But the veteran turned things around in late July after being traded to the Yankees, hitting .322/.340/.454 with five home runs in sixty-seven games.

Ichiro currently stands three hundred ninety-four hits short of three thousand in his career, an amazing feat considering he did not move to the MLB until his age-27 season.
