The New York Mets are serious about keeping franchise player David Wright in a Mets uniform for life and to prove it, the team is offering Wright a seven-year, $135-140 million extension, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
The latest contract offer from the Mets displays a sense of urgency from the team and could lead to a deal, writes Heyman, but it is still up to Wright on deciding whether he wants to test the market next season or not. Wright has stated he would like to remain a New York Met for life.
The 29-year-old is coming off of a 2012 in which he was one of the best players in the game, having a fantastic defensive season and batting .306/.391/.492 with 21 home runs.
If for some reason the two sides cannot reach an agreement, Wright could still remain a Met for another season, as he's under contract through 2013 and is currently slated to earn $16 million in his walk year.
